Department Information

“The scientific mind does not so much provide the right answers as ask the right questions.”

Welcome to the Dŵr-y-felin Science Department.

The aim of the Science Department is to give pupils an enthusiasm and interest in Science, whilst attaining the highest standards. This is achieved through a range of practical, theoretical and problem solving activities. The department aims to ensure the material and topics covered are relevant to pupils and meet the National Curriculum requirements

Years 7, 8 and 9 continue the excellent scientific grounding initiated by our Partner Primary Schools by offering a modern, interesting and relevant Science Curriculum that aims to deliver a balance of Scientific Knowledge and Scientific practical and investigative Skills.

For GCSE, we offer a number of different options for our pupils, reflecting the wide range of interests and abilities of our learners.

Single Science is the preferred option of those pupils who have previously found Science too demanding and challenging at Key Stage 2 and 3, or it may be chosen by those whose interests lie in other disciplines.

However, most pupils in Years 10 and 11 will follow the Double Science GCSE course comprising “Core Science” in Year 10, followed by “Additional Science” in Year 11.

There is also an opportunity for pupils to study separate sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), which offer a full appreciation of the subject and its role in today's society. Pupils who want to pursue a career in Dentistry, Medicine and Pharmacy would find that GCSE’s in separate sciences can be an advantage when applying for a place at certain University’s.

Coursework consists of Investigative Skill Assessments (ISA) in each subject The ISA constitutes up to 20% of the final GCSE Grade.

Pupils will sit externally assessed GCSE’s at the end of Year 10 and Year 11.

The Science Specification followed is AQA Science B.
