Department Information

Welcome to GCSE Resistant Materials, throughout Year 10 and 11 pupils will complete a major coursework project that will be worth 60% of their final mark. The written examination will be worth 40%.

Coursework 60 % (approximately 40 hours)

This involves one integrated design and make project, of approximately forty hours' duration. The coursework project will require a design folder that demonstrates the ability to investigate problems, develop ideas, propose solutions, and plan how to produce their chosen design and show evidence of ICT work, especially CAD/CAM. Practical work must demonstrate a high level of skill and quality of finish.

Pupils can access tasks set, suggested websites for exemplary material and worksheets to aid their work from the coursework resources section of this website.

Examination -Written Papers 40 % (2 hours)

Part of the Resistant Materials course requires pupils sit a 2 hour exam. It is essential that pupils are fully prepared for exam as it is very important.

The exam consists of 2 papers:-

Paper 1 Core paper- 10 % (30 minutes)
This common paper consists of three questions which address the Key Stage 4 Programme of Study.

Paper 2 Focus area - 30 % (1 hour 30 minutes)
This is a consistent format of five questions, the fifth being a design question worth 25% of the marks for this paper.

Pupils will sit two mock exams, one the end of Year 10 and another one in Year 11 just before Christmas. Please use the Revision section as it will be an enormous help to you!
