What is a BTEC First Diploma?
A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It introduces you to the area of employment and provides a good basis to go on to (more advanced) work related qualifications.
A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A* - C
What are the entry requirements?
- A good standard of literacy and numeracy.
- Good motivation to work and complete assignments.
- A willingness to be involved with vocational work/visits.
- Aptitude for computers.
- Motivation to work independently.
What is the course structure?
The course is made up of six units = two core units and four specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study a particular area in more depth.
What subjects will I study?
In Year 10 – 3 units and in Year 11 – 3 units.
Work experience will be used as part of the next specialist unit.
How is the course assessed?
All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.
What can I do at the end of the course?
If you want to get a job straight away you could go into the following:
- Registered Care Homes
- Hospitals and Primary Care Trusts
- Nursing Homes
- Health Centres
With further training or study, you can go into the following careers as such:
- Nursing
- Social Work
- Residential Care Management
A BTEC First Diploma prepares you for employment and provides a good grounding to go on to a more advanced course such as:
- BTEC National Diploma or Certificate in Care
- BTEC National Diploma or Certificate in Health Studies
