Key Stage 4 Drama Outline
Key Stage 4 Drama uses the Edexcel Specification, which provides an assessment framework for a flexible course of study guided by the teacher. The Edexcel GCSE in Drama is a general qualification in drama as a single arts discipline subject.
The course is organized in the following way:
60% Teacher-assessed coursework
Paper 1
Drama is used to explore ideas and issues in response to stimuli
selected from different times and/or cultures.
Paper 2
Pupils will explore a complete play text where they will develop knowledge and understanding of the ways in which playwrights, performers, directors and designers use the medium of drama to communicate their ideas to the audience.
40% Externally assessed practical examination
Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills as performers either by acting from a play text or by devising their own work. The teacher will give guidance during this process.
There is no prior knowledge required for this specification but pupils are expected to be both committed and creative. As a part of the course pupils should also be given the opportunity to watch at least one live performance.
